Car Rentals: Planning a Weekend Getaway

When I moved to the big city, buying a car seemed like a waste of money. The subway takes me anywhere I want to go, and there are always cabs as a backup. When I do want to get out of the city for a weekend, I arrange for a car rental. Rentals are great for me. I get to choose the type of vehicle that I want, buy insurance to cover the trip, and concentrate on enjoying myself. If the car develops engine trouble, I call the agency and they pick me up in a replacement. Thanks to my club discounts, I even get price breaks on some of my rentals. If you are new to the idea of renting a car, let me help. I'll show you how to get the best terms, including the lowest price. That'll make for a more pleasant trip.

3 Tips For Saving When You Rent A Car

Blog

If you need to rent a car for a week or more, you are going to want to make sure that you get the best rate. In order to secure the best rate, remember that the size of vehicle you rent matters as well as the length of time that you rent for. Finally, always check and see if your insurance coverage extends to your rental vehicle.

Longer Is Better

When you use a car rental agency, find out what the rental rate is to rent the vehicle for the day and for the week. Many rental car agencies actually offer better deals if you rent a vehicle from them for an entire week instead of just a few days. Even if you only need to rent a vehicle for three days, you may actually save money by renting the vehicle for a week.

If you need to rent the vehicle for a longer period of time, such as a month, see if there are any discounts you can get upfront by renting and paying for the vehicle for the month.

Size Matters

When you rent a rental car, size matters. Generally, the larger the vehicle, the more you pay for the vehicle.  However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, there may be a deal on a certain size vehicle.

It is best to reserve the smallest size vehicle you would be comfortable driving. Then, when you get to the car rental agency, you can see if you can get an upgrade to a larger vehicle. Sometimes, if they don't have any small vehicles on their lot, they will upgrade you for free. Other times, the opposite happens. They don't have the vehicle size you want and will offer you a smaller vehicle at a discounted rate.

Coverage Counts

Finally, call your insurance provider before you rent a vehicle and see if your insurance coverage carries over to your rental vehicle. With most insurance companies, your insurance coverage will carry over to your rental vehicle. If you have full coverage on your regular vehicle, you may not have to spring for insurance from the rental agency.

If you don't have full coverage, but have some insurance coverage, you may be able to only pay for the gaps between your insurance coverage and full-coverage. Either way, you save some money on your rental.

If you need to rent a vehicle, find out what savings are offered for long term rentals. It is often more affordable to rent a vehicle for a week than it is for a few days, and it can be more affordable to rent a vehicle for a month over a couple of weeks. Think carefully about what size vehicle you want to rent, because you are going to pay a lot more for a larger vehicle. Finally, check and see if your insurance coverage will extend to your rental so you can reduce some of the daily rental fees you have to pay.
